Where do you belong, on Firelfy or the Enterprise?

Today was Indulgence Friday, Daryl and I slipped away together to watch Star Trek and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Don't look for science, take a deep breath and go along for the ride.

But, at the end, where Kirk is getting a medal for saving the earth I felt stifled. I would much rather have been sucked through that black hole into the vastness of space and gone off exploring without ever having to answer to the stuffed shirts back on earth.

It made me realise I would be more comfortable on the bridge of the Firefly Serenity, than on the Enterprise. I'm more comfortable writing about misfit characters, who slip through the cracks of officialdom.

Where do you belong, on the bridge of the Enterprise or on the Firefly Serenity?

I felt the same way after watching the recent(ish) animated SF Treasure Island - it was really pretty and cool and had great effects and all but... at the end the main character was so *conforming*, with his neat uniform and his neat haircut.

Rowena - i completely agree. Plus - Firefly is so much more cosy and homey than the Enterprise will ever be! The baddies are much scarier in the Firefly universe, that's the only problem!

Tanaudel -- Conforming. Yes, that's what I found uncomfortable. The Kirk character was set up as a real trouble maker, then the moment he got accepted, he towed the line.

Sal -- I LOVE the Firefly series. The characters are so multi-layered. You know the episode where Jayne betrays the Doctor and River? Mal shuts Jayne outside the craft and they take off, he's going to die. Jayne asks Mal not to tell the others it was him, who betrayed them and Mal lets him back in!

I could go on and on. In fact, just thinking about it makes me want to go back and re-watch the whole series.

I'll take a brown coat over a red shirt in any 'verse you care to name. Don't care if the bad guys are scarier: there's no possible way Starfleet would have me anyhow.

Dirk, if I was Captain of Serenity, I'd hire you as the cook!

Hmmm, do I even need to write the answer down *lol* I think my loyalties are widely well-known! But for posterity, it'd be Serenity.

I mean, can you imagine the cargohold of the Enterprise dirtying themselves with cows? Plus of course that kitchen is so cool....it even has real food when it can :o

I love Firefly. My favourite episode was the one when the return to a mudball planet and the settlers have written a folk song about Jayne.

Or the exchange in Serenity: "Do you want to be Captain?" "Yes I do." "Oh. Well... you can't."

Brilliant show.

hooray for non-conformists who get their hands dirty!
and rowena - i love jayne - he's such a big boofhead. i do recall that episode but i can't recall what made mal change his mind. did he eke some kinda promise out of him or something?
btw - does anyone know if those browncoats ever managed to convince a network to make more firefly shows? i know there was a push. ps. i think i just caught a glimpse of the 'mal' actor tonight in some ad for some new show ...

The change of mind was never articulated, thankfully. But it came as a result of Jayne pleading, not for his life, but for the faith of others in him. The impression I got was that if he'd begged to live, he'd have been spaced.

Anton -- I love the Jayne Town episode. It encapsulated everything that is wonderful about Firefly. Jayne's no hero -- the people made a hero of him because they need one.

Glori -- Another brown shirt. I think the Firefly fans are winning.

Sal -- I couldn't believe the network dropped Firefly. I saw Joss Whedon being interviewed with an audience in Sydney. He asked them if they would rather have a TV series or a movie of Firefly. This was after Serenity came out. They said a TV series and he nodded, like he agreed with them. I agree, too. A TV series would give him much more room to explore the characters and world.

Dirk -- Absolutely. Mal would have so dumped Jayne, if he'd pleaded for his life. It was because he pleaded for his reputation with the rest of the crew, that Mal let him live.

It's so good to talk to people who get Firefly!
